Refurbishing a used fire truck that is no longer in service into an interactive community education tool offers a cost-effective, high-impact way to boost community engagement and educate the public on fire safety. This Fire Rescue initiative aligns with our department’s mission to promote public safety, build community relationships, and educate citizens, especially children, about fire prevention and life safety.

The refurbished fire truck will serve as a mobile, multi-functional educational unit, equipped with firefighter display items, interactive monitors, smoke generator machines, and other interactive tools. These features will allow for immersive, hands-on learning experiences at local schools, community events, safety fairs, and public demonstrations. By creating a visually appealing and engaging platform, we can capture the attention of a broader audience and make fire safety education memorable and impactful.

Repurposing an older apparatus that would otherwise be decommissioned and/or auctioned provides a sustainable solution in lieu of incurring a high cost to purchase a new educational trailer. Refurbishing existing resources demonstrates fiscal responsibility, resourcefulness, and innovation. The project also supports a proactive approach to community risk reduction and fulfills our commitment to education and engagement. In summary, refurbishing a used fire truck into a public education tool is a community-centered investment with long-term educational and public relations benefits. Once the project is complete, the vehicle will be driven by our Fire Rescue Team to community events and schools on an as needed basis.

A Sunrise vendor has sufficient experience and ability to provide the customized work required to refurbish this apparatus. Big Dick's Muscle Cars, LLC provided the City with a quote to provide the required customized services in the amount of $98,000. These funds are currently budgeted in the Fire Rescue Department Budget. 

Because of the unique nature of this project, and pursuant to Section 5-173(c)(5) of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Sunrise, Florida, Staff requests that the City’s formal bidding procedures be waived for good cause for the reasons set forth in this Agenda Item Request.
