Background:
Pursuant to Broward County's Elected Official Code of Ethics, the City Commission adopted Resolution No. 11-183 to formally approve charitable organizations, nonprofit entities, fundraising events, and City events for purposes of allowing elected officials to engage in charitable solicitations for the benefit of the approved organizations and entities. Even with "formal approval," charitable solicitations must comply with all state and federal laws as well as with City and County ordinances.
Formal approval of a charitable organization or nonprofit entity allows Sunrise elected officials to represent that a charitable solicitation is on behalf of or has been approved or endorsed by the City of Sunrise. This formal approval does not authorize the City or its elected officials to donate City funds to an approved organization or entity.
A request has been made by Deputy Mayor Jacqueline A. Guzman to add The Autism Hero Project, Inc. and Miami Rescue Mission, Inc. d/b/a Broward Outreach Center (also known as The Caring Place) to the list of approved charities, as set forth in Exhibit A of Resolution No. 11-183.
The Autism Hero Project, Inc. is a Florida non-profit corporation that meets the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) criteria as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization.
Miami Rescue Mission, Inc. d/b/a Broward Outreach Center is a Florida non-profit corporation that meets the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) criteria to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions.
