Background:

As part of the City’s effort to recognize the importance of fair housing, the City of Sunrise has been holding its annual Fair Housing Art Poster Contest for over 15 years.  The contest helps foster a better sense of understanding, acceptance, and appreciation for the diversity in our neighborhoods and throughout our community.  Ensuring the City’s youngest residents have an understanding of Fair Housing principles is an integral part of the City’s Fair Housing mission.

The annual Fair Housing Art Poster contest is open to students from all elementary schools located in the City of Sunrise including Banyan Elementary School, Discovery Elementary School, Franklin Academy, Horizon Elementary School, Nob Hill Elementary School, Sandpiper Elementary School, Sawgrass Elementary School, Village Elementary School and Welleby Elementary School. Children ranging from Kindergarten through 5th grade are eligible to participate.  Contestants are divided into three grade categories:

  • Kindergarten - 1st grade
  • 2nd - 3rd grade
  • 4th - 5th grade

Students from three schools participated in the 2026 Fair Housing Art Poster Contest including Nob Hill Elementary School, Sandpiper Elementary School, and Sawgrass Elementary School.

The awards for each of the three grade categories have been selected to receive first, second and third place medals and prizes.  First prize is $100.00, second prize is $50.00 and third prize is $25.00.  Contest submissions were reviewed and ranked by representatives of the City’s Affordable Housing Advisory Board (AHAB) during the March 30, 2026 meeting.
