Background:
The Police Department has been awarded a grant in the amount of $10,102.73 from the Florida Department of Transportation, administered through the University of North Florida Training and Services Institute, Inc. d/b/a Institute of Police Technology Management (IPTM), for Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety High Visibility Enforcement and Support Program. Through this project #433144-1-8404, Contract#G3P01, the Sunrise Police Department will use Police Officers on overtime to conduct high visibility education and enforcement operations. This will utilize law enforcement support to reinforce safe pedestrian, bicyclist, and driver behaviors in priority areas throughout the City. The goal of this joint effort is to reduce traffic crashes to lessen the number of serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists, using high visibility education and enforcement details. There is no City match required as part of this grant award.
The Grant Agreement includes indemnification and insurance requirements broader than ordinarily accepted by City’s staff; however, the benefits of grant funding to develop and implement effective community level high visibility education and enforcement details to mitigate crashes and protect the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists on Florida’s roads outweighs the cost associated with any contractual liability.
In order to receive the awarded funds, it is necessary to enter into an agreement with the University of North Florida Training and Services Institute. It is requested that the City Commission approve the letter of agreement and contract attached and authorize the Chief of Police to execute all related documents necessary to effectuate this grant award.
