Background:
“In God We Trust” has been the official motto of the United States since 1956 and is also the official motto of the State of Florida. The motto appears prominently on United States currency, is inscribed on the Florida State Seal, and is displayed on the Florida State Flag, as well as within numerous state and local government buildings throughout Florida.
The historical significance of the motto is further reflected in the traditions surrounding the American flag. The 13 folds of the United States flag, when ceremonially folded, are commonly understood to represent the founding principles and values upon which the nation was established:
Life – A symbol of life.
Eternal Life – Faith in life everlasting.
Veterans – Honor to those who served.
Weakness – Humility and reliance on God.
Country – Loyalty to our nation.
Heart – Where our allegiance lies.
Armed Forces – Protection of our freedoms.
Sacrifice – Remembrance of the fallen.
Womanhood – The influence of women in shaping our nation.
Father – Tribute to fathers who gave their children in service.
Lower Seal – Recognition of God in our heritage.
Eternity – Everlasting faith.
In God We Trust – Our national motto and enduring belief.
Throughout South Florida, several municipalities and governmental bodies including the Cities of North Miami, West Miami, and Miami-Dade County, along with Winter Springs have formally adopted and displayed “In God We Trust” within their commission chambers. These actions reflect the motto’s role as a symbol of shared heritage, civic tradition, and national identity within public governance.
